Necropolis Glasgow
One of the most spooky yet beautiful places in Glasgow is the Necropolis, a centuries-old graveyard perched on top of a hill east of Glasgow Cathedral and across the Bridge of Sighs. Over 50, 000 burials have taken place in this peaceful graveyard, and it how has over 30, 000 tombstones that speckle the land. The graveyard also features some impressive yet eerie mausoleums, many of which hold numerous lairs.
The design of the Necropolis is based on the famous Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris, and is dominated by the towering 62 meter high statue of John Knox. Many of Glasgow's dignitaries and wealthy are buried here, and wandering through the tombstones and reading the inscriptions is like taking a history lesson on the who's who of Glasgow's past. It is also an excellent way to become familiar with some of the architectural work of Glasgow's artists, as many of them have had a hand in the design and building of the graveyard's markers, statues and mausoleums.
Be sure to bring a camera when visiting the Necropolis, as it provides some beautiful photo opportunities, not only of the graveyard itself but also of the city below, of which you will have panoramic view of from the graveyard's hill.
